EDITION NO. 3 OF IEC 62368-1 PUBLISHED

EDITION NO. 3 OF IEC 62368-1 PUBLISHED
February 13, 2020

International Electrotechnical Commission has introduced new requirements in the latest Edition No. 3 of IEC 62368-1, the emerging safety standard for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment. This hazard-based standard will eventually replace IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1, in addition to Edition No. 2 of the Standard, so do take note of the changes.

IEC 62368-1, Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment – Part 1: Safety requirements, is a key element of an active multi-year transition that will result in IEC 62368-1 wholly covering equipment currently falling under the scopes of the standards, IEC 60065, and IEC 60950-1.

This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

-Addition of requirements for outdoor equipment
-New requirements for optical radiation
-Addition of requirements for insulating liquids
-Addition of requirements for work cells
-Addition of requirements for wireless power transmitters
-Addition of requirements for fully insulated winding wire (FIW)
-An alternative method for determination of top, bottom and side openings for fire enclosures
-Alternative requirements for sound pressure

currently, technical committee work continues on national/regional versions of Edition No. 3 in Europe, Canada and the U.S.

The next CSA/UL 62368-1 standard based on Edition No. 3 of IEC 62368-1 is not expected to be approved/published until late 2Q or early 3Q 2019.
