The Ministry of Communications continues to promote advanced wireless infrastructure that will enable the provision of quality and fast cellular services to the citizens of Israel, in view of the growing needs of cellular communications and the growing demand for broadband data communications.
Removing the frequencies in favor of providing a service with advanced technologies based on 5th generation, will help transfer a better and faster data rate, which will lead to an improvement of the user experience to the private consumer and enable opportunities for development and innovation that will positively affect Israeli industry and economy.
Against the background of the pace of technological development in the cellular networks and the shortage of the frequency situation in Israel, the Ministry decided to set a graded outline for the closure of 2nd and 3rd generation networks by 31.12.2025. The same move is already being made by cellular operators in many countries around the world. The outline is formulated after the professional bodies in the office have examined all the aspects and alternatives on the subject.
Outline steps:
Phase A – Prohibition of commercial import of mobile devices that support only old technologies as of January 1, 2022. Notice will be issued to all relevant parties, such as: operators, importers, device sellers, consumers and the like.
Phase B – As of January 1, 2023, disconnection from the network of new mobile devices that support only old technologies, including car handsfree devices and M2M end equipment. Operators will be required to provide 2nd and 3rd generation service to existing subscribers by the time the networks close. A message will be sent to all relevant parties such as: operators, importers, device sellers, etc.
Final stage 3 – Closure of 2nd and 3rd generation networks – 31 December 2025
The old chains will close after a significant period of time given by the firm for the preparation of the general public, commercial importers and companies in the private sector.
